In 1941, during the Indochina War, French troops based in nearby Cambodia ( Kampuchea ) tired to expand their territory into Thailand, and attempt to take over Chang island. After a bitter battle, and the loss of ships and men on both sides, the Thai troops were victorious, and drove the French squadrons out. A Buddhist merit-making ceremony dedicated to the sailors and officers of the Royal Thai Navy who lost their lives is held every year, on 17th of January.
The islands surrounding Koh Chang, such as Koh Ngam, Ko Sai Kao, Ko Laoya, Ko Vai, Ko Kam, Ko Mak, and Ko Kradard offer calm and natural-beauty. Scuba diving and snorkeling can be done on the Coral reefs of Ko Wai, Ko Kra, and the koh Rang islands.
